General description of the collection: The Norman L. Smith, Sr. papers consist of his report, "The Activation of Fort William H. Seward; Colonel Thomas C. Woodbury and 'The Old Guard,' Haines, Alaska 1904," as presented to the Museum Alaska-Alaska Historical Society Conference, at Haines, Alaska on 23-27 September 2003. Smith's report is divided into two sections. The first section describes the career of Colonel Thomas C. Woodbury, and the second section gives a brief history of the Old Guard, the 3rd Infantry Regiment.
